Having understood the basic components of an aquaponics system, it is time to get on with some real action. But wait…

Have You Got Your Aquaponics Plan Worked Out?

It is important to plan prior to the building of your aquaponics system. As with any projects, if you do not have the right aquaponics system plans, you will likely make mistakes and get frustrated.

use detailed aquaponics plans for your setup

Without proper guidance and careful planning, it is not easy for a DIY beginner to turn an idea into reality and ensure that the DIY aquaponics system will be effective and successful in the long run.

You will need a plan that meets your defined space constraints, goals and requirements.

For example, are you rearing the fish for your consumption or decoration? Are you growing the crops for your family’s consumption or do you plan to sell them?

This will determine the type of aquaponics system design you should adopt, types of plants and fish to grow as well as the size of your aquaponics system.

The Best Place to Get Aquaponics Plans

Are you hoping to find free DIY aquaponics plans that you can download immediately? I, too, spent a lot of time searching for them online when I first started aquaponics.

The sad news is that all the free plans that I stumbled upon leaves more to be desired.

They are often too simplistic and lacked details. On first glance, they may cover the basic components of an aquaponics system but you need more than just the grow beds and fish tanks to build your aquaponics system from scratch.

There are a lot more fine details needed to get your system running, including piping and fittings, good filtration and aeration systems, as well as well-designed pumping system. Just to name a few.

And when I actually tried to follow their aquaponics plans, I realized that some their procedures can be confusing at times or steps could be missing. In some cases, no clear aquaponics diagram was provided.

The Good News…

The good news is that even though you may not be able to find good free aquaponics system plans easily, there are some good, reliable and affordable websites that provides very comprehensive guides as well as easy-to-follow step by step instructions.

Here is one of my favourite places that offer the best selection of DIY aquaponics plans. They even provide video step-by-step building instructions:

Good DIY Aquaponics Plans…

Good DIY plans should include building material list, detailed aquaponics equipment plans and scaled aquaponics diagram, along with step-by-step building instructions that are easy to follow.

As it is not easy to find a plan that meets all your goals and constraints, you often need to customize and personalize the designs. Hence, it is preferable that the aquaponics plans you purchase also provide a comprehensive guide to help you do so. For example, teaching you how to size your aquaponics system.

Tip: As a beginner, you might want to start small so that the aquaponics garden is more manageable. However, you can look for aquaponics system plans that give you the flexibility of future expansion.

In addition to the basic aquaponics system components (media-filled grow beds and fish tanks), aquaponics plans should also include details of the filtration system, oxygen distribution system, pumping system, piping, fittings, tubes, cables and electrical works.

Filtration system (or clarifier) is needed to remove unwanted solids from the water before flowing into the grow beds. This is important in preventing the solid materials from accumulating in the media-filled grow beds; else the growth of your crops could be hindered.

You will also need to choose a suitable aerator to ensure that dissolved oxygen is well-distributed in your fish tanks. Sufficient supply of dissolved oxygen is vital for your fish, plant roots and even the beneficial bacteria!

The pumping system is also crucial for your aquaponics system as water needs to be pumped from the fish tank to the grow bed.

Tip: Energy efficient aquaponics system plans are often designed such that fish tanks are placed below the grow beds so that pumps are only required to pump the water from the fish tank to the grow bed and the water will be returned to the fish tank by gravity.

Important: Look out for DIY aquaponics plans that are practical and ergonomic in their designs.

Pot placement is preferably at waist level so as to avoid back-bending actions when you check on your plants or harvest the crops. The heavy fish tanks can also be placed on the ground below the grow beds to save space.
